AUMC’s started serving in Haiti soon after the earthquake of 2010. We partnered with a school and children’s home in the heart of Port-au-Prince in an area known as The Ravine. As the name implies, this area is a low lying area where water naturally flows from the hills around it. This water is filled with trash and serves as open sewers for all those that reside in the area. Living conditions are among the poorest in the world. Tiny one room homes and tent houses are perched on the edge of the ravine. There is virtually no infrastructure or education system. Small Christian schools and children’s homes are the children’s main hope of escaping the poverty and improving Haiti from the inside. Our church has funded several additions to the school building and also installed sewing and computer labs. We also continue to financially support this children’s home and a nearby home for children with special needs, that are abandoned by their parents. AUMC sends several teams throughout the year to fellowship with and encourage the kids in the home and provide medical care to surrounding neighborhoods.
