About Ecuador:
The
2006 AUMC Ecuador Mission Team
had a productive trip working
with the Tsachila Indians near
Santo Domingo and with
construction of a day care
center near Quito. The church
service led by Bro. George
Mathison in a Tsachila village
was inspiring. Four years ago
when the first AUMC mission team
worked with the Tsachila, they
could not even mention God,
Jesus or religion. Bible
Schools have been taught the
past two years with the team
this year being able to
distribute more than 300 Spanish
Bibles to the children and
adults in the Tsachila
villages. Following Bro.
George’s sermon, two Tsachila
leaders indicated an interest in
attending seminary and forming
churches in the Tsachila
villages. God certainly had a
plan!
The medical/dental/pharmacy team
was able to serve several
hundred people. Reading glasses
and sunglasses were also
distributed to many in need.
SIFAT Ecuador and MAP
international have trained a
dozen health providers,
following an example set in
Bolivia where AUMC is working
with the Quechua Indians.
Long-term health care planning,
with yearly health care support
from AUMC, has improved the
health of the Tsachila people.
The construction team worked in
Atacucho, on a mountainside
above Quito (10,000 ft in
elevation). SIFAT Ecuador is
constructing a 5-story day care
center, its second in this very
poor area. The day care center
provides food, health care and
Christian-based training for
children that would otherwise be
locked in homes during the day
while their mothers eek out a
living. Handmade necklaces sold
last year and that will be sold
this year (at UMW Bazaar and in
Hamil Court), are made by
“Sister to Sister” (Hermana a
Hermana), an organization of
mothers who study the Bible
together and generate funds to
feed their families and support
operation of the day care
centers.
It is the goal of the Work Area
on Missions to provide
opportunities for members to
serve in a wide range of mission
activities, from local, in-state
and in-country service and
disaster relief activities, as
well as international mission
trips. Your participation can
help others live a better life.
